Overview & Description

Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Strawberry Sundae’) is a compact, reblooming panicle hydrangea prized for its deliciously coloured, conical flower clusters that resemble a strawberry sundae dessert. In mid-summer, large, dense flower heads emerge creamy white, then transition to soft pink from the bottom up, finally maturing to rich strawberry-red at the base while the tips remain white, creating a striking two-toned effect. The blooms are held on strong, sturdy stems that resist flopping, even after heavy rain. Its dark green, ovate foliage is disease-resistant and provides an attractive backdrop for the multi-coloured floral display.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a compact, rounded, upright growth habit. It is a slow to moderate-growing dwarf shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 36 – 48 inches in height with a spread of 30 – 36 inches.

Additional Notes

It blooms from mid-summer through fall on new wood. Hardy to Zone 4, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, organically rich soil. It is low-maintenance, deer resistant, and attracts pollinators. Prune in late spring to shape and promote vigorous growth. An outstanding choice for small-space gardens, and northern landscapes where strawberry-red and white blooms, compact habit, and reliable performance are desired.
