Overview & Description
The Bud’s Yellow Dogwood (Cornus alba ‘Bud’s Yellow’) is a compact, multi-stemmed shrub prized for its brilliant golden-yellow stems that provide vibrant winter colour. In late spring to early summer, it produces flat clusters of creamy-white flowers, followed by attractive white berries that birds enjoy. The oval, dark green leaves turn attractive shades of red and purple in autumn before falling to reveal the stunning yellow stems. This cultivar is often considered an improvement over older yellow-twig varieties, with better winter colour.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, spreading, multi-stemmed growth habit. It is a relatively compact dogwood, typically reaching a mature size of about 5 to 6 feet in both height and spread, though it can occasionally reach up to 7-8 feet.
Additional Notes
It blooms in late spring to early summer. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 3, it is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, including wet soils, and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Best stem colour develops in full sun; for optimal colour, prune by removing older stems in spring. An outstanding choice for mass plantings, winter gardens, mixed borders, erosion control on banks, or as a low-maintenance shrub providing four-season interest.
