The Romeo cherry shrub (Prunus × kerrasis ‘Romeo’) is a hardy, compact fruiting shrub developed by the University of Saskatchewan as part of their dwarf sour cherry breeding program. Reaching a mature height of approximately 2 to 2.5 metres, Romeo is ideal for smaller gardens or urban spaces. It produces an abundance of deep red to almost black cherries in mid to late summer. The fruit is sweet-tart, making it excellent for fresh eating, baking, preserves, and winemaking. Romeo is self-pollinating but will yield more heavily when planted near another compatible cherry like Juliet. The shrub has attractive green foliage through the growing season, turning yellow in the fall. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and once established, it is drought tolerant and very cold hardy—ideal for northern climates. Romeo cherry shrubs also offer ornamental value with their white spring blossoms and manageable, bushy form. Low maintenance and productive, it’s a garden favorite.
