Overview & Description

The Blue Fox Willow (Salix brachycarpa ‘Blue Fox’) is a charming, compact deciduous shrub prized for its distinctive upright, globe-shaped form. Its delicate, fine-textured foliage features stunning silvery-blue to blue-grey leaves, beautifully contrasting against its striking smooth purple branches that provide excellent winter interest. This dense, multi-stemmed shrub, selected from a native North American species, offers a refined, tidy appearance with its relatively fine texture.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, upright, and rounded growth habit . It is a medium-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet in both height and spread. It grows at a medium rate and, under ideal conditions, can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

Additional Notes

It blooms in spring with inconspicuous green flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 2 and low-maintenance, it is amazingly adaptable, tolerating both dry conditions and even some standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, is highly tolerant of urban pollution, and is deer resistant. An outstanding choice for foundation plantings, borders, low hedges, rain gardens, mass plantings, or as a striking specimen where unique color, graceful form, and year-round structure are desired.
