Overview & Description
Pufferfish® Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Pufferfish’) is a unique, compact panicle hydrangea prized for its distinctive, rounded, dome-shaped flower heads that resemble the inflated body of a pufferfish. Unlike traditional conical panicle hydrangeas, Pufferfish produces dense, globular clusters of sterile florets that open soft lime-green, mature to pure white, and develop subtle pink blushes as autumn approaches. The playful, full blooms are held on strong, sturdy stems that resist flopping, even after heavy rain. Its dark green, ovate foliage is disease-resistant and provides an attractive backdrop for the whimsical floral display.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a compact, rounded, mounding growth habit. It is a slow to moderate-growing dwarf shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 24 – 36 inches in both height and spread.
Additional Notes
It blooms from mid-summer through fall on new wood. Hardy to Zone 4, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, organically rich soil. It is low-maintenance, deer resistant, and attracts pollinators. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and promote vigorous growth. An outstanding choice for small-space gardens, children’s gardens, and northern landscapes where unique rounded blooms, compact habit, and reliable performance are desired.
