Overview & Description

The First Editions® Little Devil™ Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Donna May’ PP22,634) is a standout shrub known for its striking deep burgundy-purple foliage that holds its color throughout the growing season, emerging bronze-green before darkening. This compact, dense shrub features small, serrated, lobed leaves with a fine texture, setting it apart from other ninebarks. In early summer, clusters of small, purplish-white to white flowers with shell pink overtones bloom, beautifully contrasting with the dark foliage. These are followed by subtle reddish fruit capsules, and the peeling tan bark adds winter interest.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, upright spreading to mounded growth habit. It is a compact shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. It has a medium growth rate and can live for approximately 30 years.

Additional Notes

It blooms in early summer. Exceptionally cold-hardy to Zone 2, it thrives in full sun to partial shade for best foliage color, is adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils, and is tolerant of both dry and moist locations, as well as urban pollution. It is deer resistant, attracts butterflies, and requires little to no pruning. An outstanding choice for small gardens, borders, mass plantings, low hedges, screens, or containers where vibrant, dark foliage and multi-season interest are desired. It is a good substitute for barberry in regions where it is considered invasive. It is mildew resistant, pest-free, and low-maintenance.
