Overview & Description

The Dwarf Winged Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus ‘Compactus’) is a compact, multi-season shrub known for its stunning visual appeal . In spring, it produces tiny, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers, followed by glossy dark green summer foliage. As autumn arrives, the leaves transform into a brilliant, show-stopping scarlet red, making it a standout feature in fall landscapes. It develops small, orange-red ornamental fruit in fall that persists, adding interest. Unique corky, winged, or ridged bark provides winter texture and interest.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, compact, and mounded growth habit. It forms a tidy shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 6 to 8 feet in height with a spread of 8 to 10 feet. It has a slow growth rate.

Additional Notes

It blooms in late spring. Hardy to Zone 4, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to moist, well-drained soil, including clay soil. It is tolerant of urban pollution, deer, and areas near Black Walnut trees. It is low-maintenance and may be lightly pruned in winter. An outstanding choice for borders, foundation plantings, hedges, or small gardens where vibrant fall colour, attractive fruit, and year-round interest are desired.
