Overview & Description

The Cherry Bomb™ Barberry (Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea ‘Monomb’) is a compact, mounded cultivar prized for its vibrant, season-long foliage colour. Its leaves emerge bright cherry-red in spring, mature to deep purplish-red, and finish with brilliant scarlet-orange hues in fall. Small, pale yellow flowers appear in spring. This deciduous shrub features a dense, rounded habit with thorny stems that provide natural deer resistance.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, rounded, and mounded growth habit. It forms a tidy, well-shaped shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet in both height and spread.

Additional Notes

It blooms in mid-spring with small pale yellow flowers. Extremely cold-hardy to Zone 4, drought-tolerant, and adaptable to a wide range of soils, it thrives in full sun for the best colour. Low-maintenance and tough. An outstanding choice for foundation plantings, low hedges, borders, and mass plantings where bold, long-lasting red colour and maximum visual impact are desired with minimal care.
