Overview & Description

The Tor Birchleaf Spirea (Spiraea betulifolia ‘Tor’) is a compact, rounded deciduous shrub known for its stunning seasonal changes and elegant appearance. Its small, birch-like, dark green leaves provide a lush, fine-textured backdrop in spring and summer, transforming into impressive shades of orange, red, and purple in the fall. In late spring, the shrub is covered with dense, flat-topped clusters of tiny white flowers with gold stamens, adding a touch of charm and attracting butterflies.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, compact, rounded to mounded growth habit. It typically reaches a mature size of about 2 to 3 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. It has a medium growth rate and can live for approximately 20 years under ideal conditions.

Additional Notes

It blooms in late spring to early summer. This low-maintenance shrub is easily grown in average, well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. To encourage reblooming, simply remove faded flowers by light shearing after the initial bloom period. Any pruning should be done in spring as it flowers on new wood. Adaptable to various soil types and highly tolerant of urban pollution, it is also deer resistant. An excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, low hedges, mass plantings, or small garden spaces where vibrant fall foliage, spring blooms, and easy-care nature are desired.
