The Dwarf European Cranberrybush Viburnum (Viburnum opulus ‘Nanum’) is a compact, hardy, deciduous shrub prized for its dense, rounded form and dependable foliage. This dwarf cultivar features three-lobed, maple-like leaves that are glossy and dark green during the growing season. Unlike the species, it rarely produces flowers or the showy red fruit that characterize its full-size counterpart. Its primary ornamental appeal lies in its clean, neat habit and its vibrant fall color, which transforms the foliage to attractive shades of reddish-purple.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a very dense, multi-stemmed, and compact mounded to rounded growth habit. It is a slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 2 to 4 feet in both height and spread, often staying closer to 2-3 feet over many years. It is ideal for low-maintenance landscapes and small spaces.

Additional Notes

It rarely blooms. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 2 and low-maintenance, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor and dry conditions. It is tolerant of urban pollution, deer resistant, and not particular about soil pH. An outstanding choice for ground cover, low hedges, foundation plantings, and mass plantings where a tidy, reliable, and foliage-centric shrub is desired.
