Overview & Description

The Tiger Eyes Cutleaf Sumac (Rhus typhina ‘Bailtiger’ P.P.# 16185), from First Editions®, is a stunning and unique dwarf shrub known for its vibrant gold foliage and striking seasonal colour changes. Its new leaves emerge a bright chartreuse, maturing to rich golden-yellow, and contrast beautifully with the fuzzy, rosy-pink stems. The branches angle upward while the deeply cut, fern-like leaflets drape gracefully downward, creating a dynamic, eye-catching, and almost oriental appearance. In fall, the foliage intensifies to a brilliant mix of yellow, orange, and scarlet.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits an upright, rounded, and spreading growth habit. It is a dwarf, medium-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 5-6 feet in both height and spread. It suckers less profusely than other sumacs and does not have a heavy seed set.

Additional Notes

It blooms in summer with greenish-yellow flowers, and female plants may produce small, crimson, cone-shaped fruit clusters that persist into winter, attracting birds. This adaptable and drought-tolerant shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor, dry, and urban conditions. Hardy to Zone 3. An outstanding choice for use as a specimen, in borders, or as a dramatic accent where vibrant, season-long foliage and unique form are desired.
