Overview & Description

Taunton Spreading Yew (Taxus x media ‘Tauntoni’) is a hardy, slow-growing, dense, dwarf evergreen shrub prized for its spreading form and exceptional winter hardiness. New foliage emerges bright green, maturing to a rich dark green that persists throughout the year. This cultivar is extremely resistant to winter burn, making it a reliable choice for exposed sites and colder climates where other evergreens may suffer damage.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, spreading, low-growing, rounded habit. It is a slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 36 – 48 inches in height with a spread of 4 – 5 feet.

Additional Notes

It does not have showy flowers. Hardy to Zone 3, it is drought tolerant once established and prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil. All parts are poisonous if ingested. An outstanding choice for hedges, accents, mass plantings, foundation plantings, and winter interest gardens where dense spreading form, winter burn resistance, and reliable evergreen colour are desired.
