Overview & Description

The Blue Rug Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltoni’) is a vibrant, low-spreading evergreen that creates a stunning carpet of silvery-blue, feathery foliage. As seasons change, its needles take on subtle purple-plum hues in winter, adding dynamic colour to the landscape. This ground-hugging conifer forms a dense mat of soft-textured, trailing branches that root where they touch the soil.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a fast-growing, prostrate to trailing growth habit with excellent ground-covering ability. It is a low-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 4 to 6 inches in height with a spread of 6 to 8 feet. It can spread up to 10 feet over time, making it ideal for covering large areas, slopes, or cascading over walls.

Additional Notes

It does not have showy flowers. Hardy to Zone 3, it is drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, and resistant to deer once established. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating poor, dry, and rocky conditions. An outstanding choice for groundcover, mass plantings, erosion control on slopes, rock gardens, or cascading over walls where low-maintenance texture, cool-toned contrast, and year-round interest are desired.
