Overview & Description
Swiss Mountain Pine (Pinus mugo ‘Rostrata’) is a neat, symmetrical, compact evergreen conifer with a central leader, slowly forming a dense Christmas tree shape. Its rich green needles beautifully highlight the brown cones that appear as the tree matures, adding ornamental interest. This improved selection offers the classic Mugo Pine charm in a more upright, tree-like form with a well-defined central leader.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, symmetrical, compact, upright growth habit with a central leader. It is a slow-growing conifer, typically reaching a mature size of about 10 – 13 feet in height with a spread of 6.5 – 8 feet.
Additional Notes
It produces brown cones with maturity. Hardy to Zone 2, it is adaptable to many sites, drought and salt tolerant once established, and prefers acidic soil with adequate drainage. An outstanding choice for specimen plantings, foundation plantings, hedges, screens, and winter interest gardens where neat, symmetrical, compact form, rich green needles, and central leader are desired.
