Overview & Description
Storm Proof Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens ‘Storm Proof’) is a superior smooth hydrangea cultivar prized for its exceptionally strong, sturdy stems that hold its massive, dome-shaped flower clusters upright, even after heavy rain and wind. The enormous white mophead blooms emerge lime-green in early summer, mature to pure white, and may develop subtle green or pink tones as they age. Unlike traditional ‘Annabelle’ hydrangeas, Storm Proof’s reinforced stems prevent flopping, keeping the spectacular floral display at its best all season long. Its large, dark green, heart-shaped foliage is highly disease-resistant and provides a lush, attractive backdrop.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits an upright, rounded, bushy growth habit. It is a moderate-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 – 4 feet in both height and spread.
Additional Notes
It blooms from early summer through fall on new wood, ensuring reliable flowering even after harsh winters. Hardy to Zone 3, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, organically rich soil. It is low-maintenance, deer resistant, and attracts pollinators. Prune in late winter or early spring. An outstanding choice for cut flower gardens, exposed landscapes, and northern gardens where wind and rain-resistant blooms, reliable performance, and compact habit are desired.
