Overview & Description
The Snowmound Spirea (Spiraea nipponica ‘Snowmound’) is a charming and compact deciduous shrub, celebrated for its graceful, arching branches and rounded form. Its small, oval, dark blue-green leaves turn a coppery-bronze to soft yellow-orange in the fall, adding seasonal interest to your garden. In late spring, the plant is adorned with a profusion of rounded, frothy clusters of pure white flowers that cover the arching stems like a mound of snow, creating a stunning display.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, mounded to upright, vase-shaped growth habit that becomes arching and spreading with age. It typically reaches a mature size of about 3 to 5 feet in height with a similar spread of 3 to 5 feet. It grows at a moderate to fast rate.
Additional Notes
It blooms in mid to late spring on new wood, and flowers are attractive to butterflies. Hardy in Zones 3, this low-maintenance shrub is easily grown in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay. It is drought-tolerant, rabbit and deer resistant, and tolerant of urban pollution. Prune in spring; removing spent blooms can improve appearance. An excellent choice for foundation plantings, borders, low hedges, mass plantings, or as a standout accent where elegance and seasonal charm are desired.
