Overview & Description

The Russian Almond (Prunus tenella) is a dazzling ornamental deciduous shrub, celebrated for its early-season display of profuse, showy, deep pink flowers that smother its branches in spring before the leaves emerge. Its glossy, dark green, small oval leaves provide a lush backdrop in summer, transitioning to a striking yellowish-orange to gold hue in autumn, adding multi-season interest to the garden. It produces small, fuzzy, almond-like fruits.

Growth & Size

This hardy shrub exhibits a bushy, upright-spreading to rounded form and tends to sucker and spread, slowly forming a thicket. It is a slow to medium-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 4-5 feet in height and up to 5 feet in width.

Additional Notes

It blooms in early spring. Exceptionally cold-hardy to Zone 3, it thrives in full sun and adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor soils, and is drought-tolerant once established. It is generally pest-free and provides habitat for wildlife. Because of its suckering nature, it is best given ample space to grow. An outstanding choice for borders, mass plantings, or as a naturalized feature where vibrant spring colour and autumn foliage are desired.
