Overview & Description

The Pygmy Peashrub Caragana (Caragana pygmaea) is a hardy, fine-textured deciduous shrub known for its upright to slightly arching growth habit. It features small, pinnately compound leaves in a soft gray-green to bright green color, creating a delicate appearance. In late spring, it produces masses of cheerful, small gold to bright yellow pea-like flowers that hang below the branches, adding vibrant seasonal color. The stems may have small spines and attractive reddish-brown winter bark. This shrub is noted for attracting pollinators.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, multi-stemmed, and upright-spreading growth habit. It forms a compact, rounded shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet in height with a slightly wider spread of up to 4 feet.

Additional Notes

It blooms in late spring with yellow flowers. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 2, it is highly drought-tolerant and adaptable to poor, dry, alkaline soils once established, thriving in full sun. It tolerates salt, wind, and urban pollution, making it ideal for challenging environments. Low-maintenance and suitable for hedges, borders, foundation plantings, or xeriscaping.
