Overview & Description

Prairie Sensation Apple (Malus ‘Prairie Sensation’) is a cold-hardy, mid-season apple variety developed at the University of Saskatchewan and introduced in 2006, prized as a premier dessert selection for northern climates. In Spring, its branches are adorned with showy, fragrant white blossoms that emerge from pink buds, attracting pollinators. The flesh is firm, crisp, and exceptionally juicy with a pleasantly sweet, aromatic flavour, making it excellent for fresh eating, baking, dried snacks, jams, jellies, and cider  Its dark green, pointy leaves turn a pleasant yellow in autumn.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a moderately upright to spreading canopy with sturdy branches. It is a medium-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 15 – 20 feet in height with a spread of 10 – 15 feet.

Additional Notes

Fruit ripens in early to mid-September. Hardy to Zone 2, it tolerates full sun, drought once established, and a range of soil conditions but does not tolerate soggy soil. It is not self-fertile and requires a different apple or flowering crabapple variety within 150 – 200 feet for cross-pollination. An outstanding choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, and northern gardens where large, crisp, juicy apples and exceptional cold hardiness are desired.
