Overview & Description

Northern Acclaim® Thornless Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Harve’) is a cold-hardy, seedless, and completely thornless selection of native Honeylocust, prized for its graceful, open, spreading canopy and fine-textured foliage. Its delicate, fern-like, bright green leaves cast a dappled, light shade that allows grass and underplantings to thrive beneath. In autumn, the foliage turns an attractive golden-yellow before dropping, offering a soft seasonal display. This cultivar produces very few to no seed pods, eliminating messy cleanup. Its attractive, scaly, dark grey-brown bark provides winter interest.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a broad, rounded, vase-shaped growth habit. It is a fast-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 40 – 50 feet in height with a spread of 30 – 40 feet.

Additional Notes

It blooms in late spring with inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers. Hardy to Zone 2, it tolerates drought, salt, urban pollution, compacted soils, and a wide range of pH levels, including alkaline conditions. It prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil but adapts to poor, dry, and clay soils. An outstanding choice for boulevards, parking lots, residential shade, and lawns where thornless, seedless, and high adaptability are desired.
