Overview & Description
The Miss Kim Lilac (Syringa patula ‘Miss Kim’) is a charming, compact shrub prized for its uniform, rounded shape and multi-season appeal. This cultivar was discovered in 1947 from seed collected in Korea and released in 1954. Its small, pointed dark green leaves have a slightly pubescent texture. In late spring, dark purple buds burst open to reveal fragrant, pale lavender to ice blue, single flowers arranged in dense, terminal clusters. As a final flourish in autumn, the foliage transforms into rich burgundy-red to purple hues, creating a stunning autumnal display.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, upright-rounded, multi-stemmed growth habit. It is a slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 4 to 7 feet in height with a spread of 5 to 7 feet. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.
Additional Notes
It blooms in late spring. This low-maintenance lilac has excellent resistance to powdery mildew, making it a good selection for southern climates and smaller areas. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds but is deer-resistant. Flowers are excellent for cutting. Prune immediately after flowering as it blooms on old wood. Perfect for borders, foundation plantings, mass plantings, or as a fragrant specimen.
