Overview & Description
The Minuet Preston Lilac (Syringa x prestoniae ‘Minuet’) is a charming, slow-growing dwarf shrub prized for its compact size and multi-season appeal. Its dark green, deeply veined leaves provide a lush, textured backdrop throughout the growing season, turning a vibrant buttery yellow in the fall for added autumnal interest. In late spring, purple buds burst open to reveal fragrant, single lavender-pink flowers in slender panicles, blooming about two weeks after common lilacs and creating a delightful display that attracts butterflies and pollinators. It does not sucker like other lilacs, making it neat and non-invasive.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, bushy, and rounded growth habit. It is slow-growing and compact, typically reaching a mature size of about 5 to 7 feet in height with a spread of 4 to 6 feet.
Additional Notes
It blooms in late spring to early summer. Hardy to Zone 2, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating a range of soil types and urban pollution. It attracts butterflies, is low-maintenance, and should be pruned immediately after flowering. An excellent choice for foundation plantings, low hedges, borders, mass plantings, or as a fragrant specimen in smaller gardens.
