Overview & Description
The Laurel Leaf Willow (Salix pentandra) is a champion of moist landscapes, combining rapid growth with multi-season appeal. This robust tree develops an attractive upright-rounded form, quickly establishing itself with glossy, dark green, lance-shaped leaves that remain vibrant late into fall before turning golden yellow. Its distinctive furrowed bark adds winter texture and character. This willow is one of the fastest-growing varieties, adding 3-4 feet per year.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, upright-rounded to oval growth habit. It is a fast-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 40 to 50 feet in height with a spread of 25 to 35 feet. It establishes almost instantly, providing immediate impact in the landscape.
Additional Notes
It blooms in spring with inconspicuous yellow catkins. Exceptionally adaptable, it thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soil types, including wet conditions and periodic flooding, where other trees often fail. It is low-maintenance and supports wildlife habitat. An outstanding choice for quick privacy screens, windbreaks, erosion control along waterways, stormwater management areas, shade for ponds, or low-maintenance park plantings where fast growth and resilience are needed in challenging wet sites.
