Overview & Description
The American Mountain Ash (Sorbus americana) is a striking ornamental tree that dazzles in every season. In spring, fragrant white flower clusters crown its upright, oval canopy, attracting pollinators. Its dark green, compound pinnate leaves transform into a fiery display of orange-red each autumn. By late summer, brilliant red berries ripen and persist through winter, creating a spectacular contrast against the foliage and providing a vital food source for birds.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits an upright, oval to rounded growth habit. It is a moderate-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 20 to 30 feet in height with a spread of 15 to 25 feet. It grows best in cooler climates.
Additional Notes
It blooms in spring with fragrant white flowers. Hardy to Zone 3, it thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, acidic soils, but it struggles in wet conditions or excessive heat. An outstanding choice for specimen plantings or focal points where four-season interest—spring flowers, summer foliage, fall color, and persistent winter berries—is desired in cooler climates.
