Overview & Description

Froebel’s Spirea (Spiraea x bumalda ‘Froebelii’) is a fast-growing, upright to rounded deciduous shrub prized for its vibrant seasonal displays. Its leaves emerge with a striking bronze-red to reddish tint in spring, mature to dark green or blue-green with purple tips in summer, and finally transform into rich shades of red to coppery-bronze in autumn. In summer, it produces dense, flat-topped clusters of bright pink to crimson-red flowers that create a striking contrast against the foliage, adding a burst of colour and attracting butterflies and pollinators.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, multi-stemmed, rounded to upright growth habit with a bushy form. It is a moderately fast-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet in height with a similar spread of 3 to 4 feet . It can be expected to live for approximately 20 years under ideal conditions.

Additional Notes

It blooms from early summer through late summer on new wood, and deadheading can promote continuous fresh flower heads . Hardy to Zone 3, it is low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, and thrives in full sun for best flowering and foliage color. It tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils and urban pollution, is rabbit and deer resistant, and attracts pollinators. For best performance, prune hard in spring. An outstanding choice for borders, foundation plantings, mass plantings, or as a colourful specimen where vibrant, multi-season interest and reliable performance are desired.
