Overview & Description
The European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia) is a charming small to medium-sized tree offering year-round beauty with its upright, rounded form. In spring, clusters of delicate, fragrant white flowers appear, attracting pollinators. Its dark green, compound pinnate leaves transform into a fiery display of orange and red each autumn. These are followed by abundant clusters of vibrant orange-red berries that persist through winter, creating a striking contrast against snowy landscapes while providing a vital food source for birds.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits an upright, rounded to oval growth habit. It is a moderate-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 20 to 30 feet in height with a spread of 15 to 25 feet. Its compact size makes it ideal for residential landscapes and small gardens.
Additional Notes
It blooms in late spring. Hardy to Zone 3, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil, avoiding wet or poorly drained sites. It is adaptable to urban conditions but performs best in cooler climates. An outstanding choice for specimen plantings where exceptional seasonal interest—spring flowers, summer foliage, fall color, and persistent winter berries—and low-maintenance appeal are desired.
