The Tristis Poplar, also known as the Swedish Columnar Aspen or Balm-of-Gilead, is a fast-growing, narrowly columnar deciduous tree prized for its rapid growth and formal appearance. It features smooth, grayish bark and glossy, dark green leaves that flutter in the breeze and turn a bright yellow in autumn.
This hybrid poplar is extremely cold-hardy (Zone 2) and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soils, including wet and poor conditions. It is primarily used for quick screening, windbreaks, and as a tall vertical accent in large-scale or commercial landscapes.
While valued for its functional speed and narrow profile, it is not a long-lived tree and can be susceptible to canker diseases and aggressive surface roots. Best suited for utilitarian plantings on acreages, farms, or in shelterbelts where a fast, tall, and narrow tree is needed for functional purposes rather than as a permanent specimen.
