Overview & Description
Bailey’s Select Schubert Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Schubert’) is a spectacular ornamental edible dazzling with dramatic seasonal transformations. In spring, fragrant white flower clusters cascade like delicate pearl necklaces, giving way to striking foliage that matures from fresh green to rich burgundy-purple. Oval leaves become a blazing red spectacle in autumn, while abundant clusters of glossy black fruit create midsummer interest. Tart, edible cherries are perfect for jams, syrups, and baking.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits an upright, vase-shaped, and well-branched growth habit, available in both single-trunk and multi-stem forms. It forms an outstanding specimen tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 20 to 25 feet in height with a spread of 15 to 20 feet.
Additional Notes
Deciduous with burgundy-purple summer foliage, blazing red autumn colour, fragrant white spring blossoms, and glossy black summer fruit. Exceptionally hardy with better disease resistance than common chokecherries. An outstanding choice for residential landscapes where three-season drama with evolving colours and edible bounty are desired.
