Overview & Description
The Prince of Wales Juniper (Juniperus sabina ‘Prince of Wales’) is a low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub celebrated for its vibrant blue-green, scale-like foliage that transforms into a striking bronze-purple hue in winter, adding seasonal interest. This dense, ground-hugging plant is a hybridized selection of the native savin juniper, making it well-suited to local climates and harsh conditions. Its soft-textured branches root where they touch the ground, creating a thick, interlocking mat.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, prostrate to trailing growth habit with excellent ground-covering ability. It is a slow to moderate-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 8 to 12 inches in height with a spread of 5 to 8 feet. It can spread up to 10 feet over time, making it ideal for covering large areas.
Additional Notes
It does not have showy flowers. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 3, it is drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, and resistant to deer and rabbits once established. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating poor, dry, and rocky conditions. An outstanding choice for groundcover, rock gardens, slopes, and mass plantings where erosion control, seasonal colour change, and low-maintenance reliability are desired.
