Overview & Description

Prairie Dream® Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera ‘Varen’ PP15768) is a superior selection of Paper Birch prized for its showy, snow-white exfoliating bark and excellent cold hardiness. Its semi-pyramidal, upright oval form features dark green foliage that turns a brilliant bright yellow in fall. This improved cultivar offers exceptional resistance to Bronze Birch Borer, making it a reliable choice for northern landscapes where native birches often struggle.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a semi-pyramidal, upright, oval growth habit. It is a moderate to fast-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 40 – 46 feet in height with a spread of 20 – 30 feet.

Additional Notes

It blooms in spring with inconspicuous catkins. Hardy to Zone 2, it has excellent cold hardiness and resistance to Bronze Birch Borer. Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Prune only when in full leaf as needed. An outstanding choice for specimen plantings, residential landscapes, parks, large gardens, and winter interest gardens where snow-white exfoliating bark, bright yellow fall foliage, and Bronze Birch Borer resistance are desired.
