Overview & Description

Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) is a large native deciduous tree prized for its iconic white, papery, peeling bark. Young bark starts reddish and matures to the characteristic white, exfoliating layers that create year-round visual interest. Oval, toothed green foliage turns a brilliant bright yellow to gold in autumn, offering a stunning seasonal display. This clump-form tree is a classic choice for naturalized landscapes.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits an upright, oval, open growth habit, often grown in a multi-stem clump form. It is a fast-growing tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 50 – 60 feet in height with a spread of 20 feet.

Additional Notes

It blooms in spring with inconspicuous catkins. Hardy to Zone 2, it prefers slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil and benefits from afternoon shade in hotter climates. Prune in summer as needed. An outstanding choice for large landscapes, native plantings, woodland gardens, naturalized areas, and winter interest gardens where iconic white peeling bark, bright yellow fall foliage, and fast-growing native performance are desired.
