Overview & Description
The Overdam Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Overdam’) is a compact, clump-forming perennial grass prized for its striking variegated foliage. Its narrow, arching leaves feature green centers with creamy-white margins that develop a subtle pink blush in spring. In early summer, tall, feathery flower plumes emerge with a pinkish tint before maturing to golden tan, persisting through winter for extended interest. This award-winning selection is a more compact and slower-growing alternative to ‘Karl Foerster’.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a strongly upright, vase-shaped, clumping growth habit. It is a moderate-growing grass, typically reaching a mature size of about 2 to 3 feet in height with a spread of 2 to 3 feet. Flower plumes rise an additional 1 to 2 feet above the foliage, adding vertical accent.
Additional Notes
It blooms from early summer to fall, with plumes excellent for cutting. Hardy to Zone 3, it is adaptable, low-maintenance, and thrives in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. It is drought and heat tolerant once established, deer resistant, and tolerant of salt and urban conditions. An outstanding choice for borders, mass plantings, or as a variegated accent where striking foliage and reliable performance are desired.
