Overview & Description
The Nugget Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Nugget’) is a compact, dense shrub celebrated for its striking gold foliage. Its leaves emerge a vivid golden-yellow in spring, sometimes tinged with red, before maturing to a vibrant lime green or chartreuse in summer. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of small, white flowers. The peeling tan bark provides interesting texture in winter, and the foliage turns yellow in autumn.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, upright to rounded, multi-stemmed growth habit. It is a compact shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 4 to 6 feet in height and 4 to 6 feet in width. It has a medium growth rate and can live for approximately 30 years.
Additional Notes
It blooms from late spring to early summer. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 2, it thrives in full sun for the best foliage color but tolerates partial shade. It is adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils, tolerates drought and urban pollution, and is low-maintenance. An outstanding choice for borders, hedges, mass plantings, or as a colorful accent where vibrant, season-long foliage and easy-care nature are desired.
