Overview & Description
The Nanking Cherry (Prunus tomentosa) is a hardy, upright to spreading deciduous shrub prized for its multi-season ornamental appeal and edible fruit. In early spring, it is covered with a profusion of fragrant, showy white to soft pink flowers that bloom before the leaves emerge. The dark green, oval leaves are deeply veined, pubescent above, and densely hairy below, often turning yellow-orange in autumn. These are followed by small, bright red, slightly tart cherries (drupes) that ripen in early to mid-summer, perfect for jams, jellies, and preserves.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a bushy, upright, and spreading growth habit, often forming a dense, rounded shrub. It typically reaches a mature size of about 6 to 10 feet in height with a spread of 10 to 15 feet, potentially developing a more open form with age.
Additional Notes
It blooms in early spring, with fruit ripening in July. Exceptionally cold-hardy to Zone 2, it thrives in full sun and adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, tolerating drought once established. It is not self-pollinating; planting at least two bushes in close proximity is required for fruit production. An outstanding choice for hedges, screens, mass plantings, or as a naturalized specimen providing year-round interest and wildlife value.
