Matadorâ„¢ Maple (Acer x freemanii ‘Bailston’) is a superior Freeman maple hybrid, discovered in 1997 at Bailey Nurseries . This First Editions® selection is prized for its symmetrical, upright oval form and exceptionally vibrant late-season color. Its bright green, lobed summer foliage transitions into a stunning deep red to orange-red in fall, appearing later than other cultivars and holding its leaves longer for an extended display . In early spring, showy clusters of red flowers appear along the branches before the leaves emerge, adding seasonal interest .
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a symmetrical, upright oval growth habit with a strong central leader . It is a fast-growing shade tree, typically reaching a mature size of about 40 – 45 feet in height with a spread of 20 – 40 feet.
Additional Notes
It blooms in early spring with insignificant red-yellow flowers, producing few seeds . Hardy to 4, it is highly adaptable, tolerating average to wet soils, standing water, and urban pollution .
