Overview & Description

The Magic Carpet Spirea (Spiraea x bumalda ‘Walbuma’ PP#9363) is a vibrant, compact shrub that adds year-round colour to any garden. Its new leaves emerge bright tomato-orange to red in spring, maturing to golden-yellow with red-bronze tips, and finally transitioning to rich russet red in fall . In early summer, it produces flat clusters of deep pink flowers that contrast beautifully with its colourful foliage, attracting butterflies and pollinators . This dense, mounded deciduous shrub has a spreading habit.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a compact, mounded to rounded growth habit. It is a moderately fast-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 2 to 3 feet in height with a spread of 2 to 4 feet.

Additional Notes

It blooms in early summer, with flowers appearing on new wood. Hardy to Zone 3, it is low-maintenance, mildew-resistant, and thrives in full sun for best colour, tolerating partial shade. It adapts to various well-drained soils and is rabbit and deer resistant. Prune in spring; removing spent flowers encourages additional blooms. An outstanding choice for borders, ground cover, and mass plantings.
