Overview & Description
The Late (Villosa) Lilac (Syringa villosa) is a hardy, dense deciduous shrub with a rounded form and upright, ascending branches. It blooms several weeks later than common lilac (S. vulgaris), extending the fragrant lilac season into early summer. Showy, fragrant flowers in shades of rosy lilac to white are borne in dense, pyramidal panicles.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a multi-stemmed, bushy, and dense growth habit. It is a medium-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 6 to 10 feet in both height and spread. It has a moderate growth rate.
Additional Notes
It blooms in late spring to early summer on new growth. Hardy to Zone 3, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing good tolerance for urban conditions and some resistance to powdery mildew. It attracts butterflies and is deer resistant. An outstanding choice for borders, informal hedges, screens, or as a background plant where reliable hardiness and late spring fragrance are desired.
