Overview & Description
The Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-Low’) is a versatile, low-growing shrub prized for its spreading habit and multi-season interest. Its attractive, aromatic, glossy green leaves are composed of three leaflets and release a clean, citrus scent when crushed. In spring, it produces small, inconspicuous yellow flowers at the branch tips. These are followed by showy, hairy red berries in late summer that persist through winter, attracting birds and wildlife. The foliage transforms into vibrant shades of red, orange, and scarlet in fall.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, mounding, and wide-spreading growth habit with upward-arching branch tips. It is a fast-growing shrub that spreads by root suckers, forming an effective ground cover. It typically reaches a mature size of about 2 to 3 feet in height with a spread of 6 to 8 feet.
Additional Notes
It blooms in early spring before leaf growth. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 3, it is adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor, rocky, or dry conditions, and tolerates full sun to full shade. It is low-maintenance, deer and rabbit resistant, and highly tolerant of urban pollution. An outstanding choice for ground cover, bank stabilization, slopes, mass plantings, and shrub borders where functional, multi-season beauty and easy care are desired.
