Overview & Description
Green Gem Boxwood (Buxus ‘Green Gem’) is a cold-hardy, slow-growing evergreen shrub prized for its exceptionally dense, rounded, globe-shaped form and rich green foliage that maintains good colour throughout winter with minimal bronzing. Its small, leathery, glossy dark green leaves provide fine texture and year-round structure, making it an excellent choice for formal gardens and low-maintenance landscapes. In spring, it produces small, inconspicuous pale green to cream flowers that are fragrant but not showy.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, compact, globe-shaped growth habit. It is a very slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 24 – 36 inches in both height and spread, taking approximately 10 years to reach full size.
Additional Notes
It blooms in mid-spring with inconspicuous flowers. Hardy to Zone 4, it is one of the most winter-hardy boxwoods available, tolerating cold temperatures, snow load, and urban pollution. Prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Protect from drying winter winds and avoid wet sites. Deer and rabbit resistant. An outstanding choice for low formal hedges, edging, foundation plantings, rock gardens, and containers where year-round evergreen colour and compact form are desired.
