Overview & Description

The Goldflame Spirea (Spiraea x bumalda ‘Goldflame’) is a stunning, low-growing shrub celebrated for its vibrant foliage that changes color throughout the seasons. Its leaves emerge a brilliant bronze-red to orange in spring, maturing to bright yellow-green in summer, and finally transitioning to a fiery coppery orange and red in fall, providing multi-season interest. In summer, the shrub is covered with flat-topped clusters of deep pink to rosy red flowers that create a striking contrast against the foliage and attract butterflies. This compact, bushy, deciduous shrub has a dense, mounded form and fine texture.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a dense, mounded, and rounded growth habit. It is a moderate to fast-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 2 to 4 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 5 feet, making it ideal for the front of borders and small spaces.

Additional Notes

It blooms from late spring through summer, with flowers appearing on new wood. Hardy to Zone 3, it is low-maintenance, rabbit and deer resistant, and tolerant of urban pollution. It thrives in full sun for best foliage color and flowering, and prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates a range of conditions. For best performance, prune in early spring and remove spent blooms to encourage continued flowering. An outstanding choice for borders, foundation plantings, low hedges, and mass plantings.
