Overview & Description

Gin Fizz Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Gin Fizz’) is a striking, slow-growing evergreen shrub prized for its vibrant, layered foliage and unique, fountain-like form. Its scale-like needles emerge in a bright, lime-green color, maturing to rich emerald green with distinctive golden-yellow tips that persist throughout the growing season, creating a refreshing, fizzy appearance reminiscent of its namesake. In winter, the foliage takes on attractive purple-bronze tones, adding seasonal interest. This dense, multi-stemmed cultivar offers a naturally layered, slightly arching growth habit that adds architectural structure to the landscape.

Growth & Size

This variety exhibits a compact, upright, pyramidal to conical growth habit with layered, arching branches. It is a slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 4 – 6 feet in height with a spread of 3 – 4 feet.

Additional Notes

It does not have showy flowers. Hardy to Zone 3, it is drought tolerant once established, adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor and rocky soils, and tolerates urban pollution and salt spray. It thrives in full sun for best foliage colour but tolerates light shade. Deer resistant and low-maintenance. An outstanding choice for foundation plantings, accent specimens, rock gardens, Asian-inspired gardens, and xeriscapes where vibrant, layered golden-green foliage and compact pyramidal form are desired.
