Overview & Description
Effusa Juniper (Juniperus communis ‘Effusa’) is a low-growing, spreading evergreen conifer prized for its soft, needle-like, blue-green to silver-green foliage and dense, ground-hugging habit. This compact, slow-growing cultivar of Common Juniper features awl-shaped needles with a distinctive white band on the upper surface, creating a fine, textural carpet that softens landscape edges. In winter, the foliage may take on subtle purple-bronze tones, adding seasonal interest. Its naturally low, spreading form requires little to no pruning to maintain its tidy appearance.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a low, spreading, prostrate to mounding growth habit. It is a slow-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 12 – 18 inches in height with a spread of 4 – 6 feet.
Additional Notes
It does not have showy flowers. Hardy to Zone 3, it is drought tolerant once established, adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor, rocky, and sandy soils, and tolerates urban pollution. It thrives in full sun to partial shade. Deer resistant and low-maintenance. An outstanding choice for groundcover, mass plantings, rock gardens, slope erosion control, foundation plantings, and xeriscapes where soft, blue-green foliage and low spreading form are desired.
