Overview & Description
The Bristlecone Pine (Pinus aristata) is a legendary, slow-growing conifer renowned as one of Earth’s oldest living organisms, with some specimens exceeding 5,000 years. Native to high-altitude rocky slopes, it develops a gnarled, picturesque form with dense, contorted branches and striking, sculptural silvery-gray bark. Short, dark green needles grow in bundles of five, often persisting for decades and creating a bottlebrush appearance. Cones feature distinctive bristle-like prickles.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a gnarled, picturesque, and extremely slow-growing habit. It forms a living sculpture with dramatic character, typically reaching a mature size of about 15 to 30 feet in height with a spread of 10 to 20 feet over many centuries.
Additional Notes
Evergreen with persistent dark green needles year-round. Hardy to Zone 4, it withstands intense wind, drought, and cold while thriving in poor, rocky, well-drained soil. A symbol of resilience, it is an outstanding choice for rock gardens, xeriscapes, or as a unique specimen where collectors and discerning gardeners seek a tree with unparalleled history and presence.
