Overview & Description
The Avalanche Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Avalanche’) is a clump-forming, cool-season perennial grass prized for its striking variegated foliage. Its narrow, arching leaves feature grey-green centers with bright white margins, creating a luminous, eye-catching display throughout the growing season. In summer, it produces tall, upright stems bearing feathery, rosy-pink inflorescences that mature to golden tan seed heads, persisting well into winter for extended seasonal interest.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a strongly upright, vase-shaped, clumping growth habit. It is a moderate to fast-growing grass, typically reaching a mature height of about 42-48 inches with a spread of 12-18 inches. Its vertical form makes it an excellent background or accent plant.
Additional Notes
It blooms in summer with rosy-pink plumes maturing to tan. Hardy to Zone 3, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, though it is drought-tolerant once established. An outstanding choice for borders, mass plantings, or as a vertical accent where striking variegated foliage, architectural form, and multi-season interest are desired.
