Overview & Description
The Autumn Magic Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa ‘Autumn Magic’) is a compact, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub prized for its multi-season ornamental appeal. In mid-to-late spring, it produces clusters of showy, white flowers that attract pollinators. These are followed by abundant, glossy black berries that ripen in late summer—though tart for fresh eating, they are excellent for jams, juices, and provide valuable wildlife food. Its glossy dark green foliage transforms into brilliant copper-orange and red hues in autumn, creating a spectacular seasonal finale.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a compact, upright, rounded growth habit. It is a moderate-growing shrub, typically reaching a mature size of about 5 feet in both height and spread. Its dense, tidy form makes it ideal for hedging, mass plantings, and smaller landscapes.
Additional Notes
It blooms in mid-to-late spring. Hardy to Zone 3, it is adaptable and requires well-drained soil but tolerates moist sites. Once established, it is low-maintenance and relatively pest-free. An outstanding choice for hedges, mass plantings, wildlife gardens, or where four-season interest—spring blooms, summer foliage, fall colour, and persistent winter fruit—is desired.
