Overview & Description
The Amur Maple (Acer ginnala) is a versatile plant, growing as a large shrub or small tree, prized for its multi-season ornamental appeal. Its glossy green, three-lobed leaves emerge in spring and transform into stunning shades of scarlet, orange, and red in autumn, creating a vibrant seasonal finale. In spring, it produces fragrant, creamy white to light yellow flowers on slender branches, adding delicate charm and attracting pollinators. These are followed by showy, reddish-pink samaras (winged seeds) in summer.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits an upright, rounded to spreading growth habit. It is a moderate-growing plant, typically reaching a mature size of about 15-20 feet in height with a similar spread, though it can be maintained as a smaller shrub. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller gardens or as an ornamental accent.
Additional Notes
It blooms in spring. Hardy to Zone 3, it is adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning should be done only when the tree is in full leaf to avoid excessive sap bleeding. An outstanding choice for specimens, hedges, screens, or where compact size and brilliant fall colour are desired.
