Latin Name: Plectranthus scutellarioides, syn. Coleus blumeiÂ
The Coleus is a vibrant, foliage-focused perennial (often grown as an annual) prized for its multicolored leaves and shade tolerance. Growing 1–3 feet (30–90 cm) tall, it’s ideal for borders, containers, and indoor gardens.
This tropical plant features serrated, heart-shaped leaves in electric combinations of red, pink, purple, yellow, and green, with patterns ranging from marbled to veined. Though it produces small blue flower spikes, many gardeners pinch them off to focus energy on foliage.
Thrives in partial shade (some sun-tolerant cultivars exist) and moist, well-draining soil. Heat-loving but frost-sensitive (hardy in zones 10–11). Deer-resistant and low-maintenance.
Perfect for brightening shady areas, pair with hostas, ferns, or impatiens.
