Choosing the Right Shrub

How to plant shrubs? Planting a shrub in your yard is an investment and makes an important addition to the landscape. Choose the site prior to choosing the shrub – know your growing zone, consider soil and drainage requirements, desired level of maintenance, water availability, sun or shade and size of the space.

Planting

Plant trees anytime from spring through fall. Spring planting allows for shrubs to set root and get established before winter comes. Fall planting also has its advantages…pick up a Blue Grass Tree Planting Guide for specific planting instructions or read the nursery label that comes with your shrub.

Watering & Fertilizing

All shrubs require regular watering to become established. Water frequently and deeply the first two years, rule of thumb 2x/week.

Apply root rescue at time of planting.  Once trees become established, apply fertilizer regularly.  Do not fertilize after July 30 – late summer / fall fertilization stimulates new growth which may be killed in the winter.
