Overview & Description
St Mary’s Broom Colorado Spruce (Picea pungens ‘St. Mary’s Broom’) is a super compact, slow-growing evergreen conifer prized for its dense, bun-shaped mound of long, intense silver-blue needles. This dwarf cultivar does not generally form a leader, maintaining its low, rounded, cushion-like form naturally without pruning. Its striking blue colour and fine texture make it an exceptional accent for small-space gardens and rockeries.
Growth & Size
This variety exhibits a dense, bun-shaped, mounding growth habit without a central leader. It is an extremely slow-growing conifer, typically reaching a mature size of about 12 – 18 inches in height with a spread of 36 inches.
Additional Notes
It does not have showy flowers. Hardy to Zone 2, it is drought tolerant once established and prefers moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. An outstanding choice for rock gardens, containers, troughs, foundation plantings, and small-space gardens where intense silver-blue colour, bun-shaped form, and extremely slow growth are desired.
