Latin Name: Plectranthus verticillatus, syn. Plectranthus australis

The Swedish Ivy is a fast-growing, trailing perennial prized for its glossy, scalloped leaves and easy-care nature. Growing 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall with trails up to 3 feet (90 cm), it’s ideal for hanging baskets, containers, and indoor gardens.

This South African native features rounded, bright green leaves with slightly serrated edges and occasional white or pale purple flower spikes in summer. Unlike true ivy (Hedera), it’s non-invasive and pet-friendly.

Thrives in bright, indirect light (tolerates shade) and well-draining soil. Drought-sensitive—water when topsoil dries. Hardy in zones 10–11; typically grown as a houseplant elsewhere.

Perfect for beginner gardeners, pair with spider plants or pothos for lush displays.

Key Features:

  • Foliage: Evergreen, succulent-like

  • Flowers: Insignificant (rare indoors)

  • Growth: Vigorous but manageable

  • Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets
